A milestone family gathering for a wedding and reception is an exciting time — it can also be an emotional time when a key member of the family is missing from the event. The desire to honor your dearly departed at your ceremony or reception is natural. However, many couples are unsure of how to incorporate a thoughtful memorial without having sadness take over.
Table Decor and More is the Charlotte metro areas’ only full-service, event planning and staging company. We are committed to providing our clients with the perfect wedding day. If honoring the memory of a lost parent, sibling, grandparent or other loved one is something you wish to do, there are numerous ways we can help you incorporate the dearly departed into your day. Memorable Memorial Tokens
It’s great to incorporate something that was meaningful to the person you are honoring. For instance, if possible the bride can use a piece of her departed mother, grandmother or sister’s wedding dress as a bouquet wrapping, hair piece or custom-made veil. To honor a father, grandfather or brother, a signature drink or cigar station are two possible ways to celebrate those who are no longer with us. Here are a few more ideas:
- Taken from an old Indian tradition, the bride can have Mehndi (a temporary Henna tattoo) put on her hands to honor a deceased loved one.
- For a beach wedding, use leis to honor loved ones — give one to each guest as they enter the wedding ceremony.
- If your loved one was a member of the military or law enforcement, you can display their flag at your reception table.
- Give guests “Forget Me Not seeds” to plant in honor of your loved one. Read more at Inked Weddings
Custom-made cufflinks are a special way to include a mini photo of a lost loved one. The groom can feel the love as he stands at the altar with the dearly departed by his side. A bride may opt to attach photo charms to her bouquet or onto the backs of her shoes. A traditional photo collage or framed collection of black-and-white or sepia-toned pictures is a stunning way to honor multiple relatives.
Reserving a Seat in Your Front Row
Removing a flower from your bouquet and placing on a chair in purposeful remembrance is a lovely way to designate the spot where your loved one would have sat. Feel free to personalize this even more by draping a jacket over the chair or placing a favorite pair of shoes or a well-worn hat or similar. Feel free to use any item that you strongly associate with the person you are honoring.
Alternatively, here are more suggestions from The Knot:
In lieu of favors, make a donation to a charity that your loved one supported.
Select one of their favorite songs for the ceremony music or reception playlist.
Light a candle for them during the ceremony. More details at The Knot
